More Than a Game: Why the Parma Volleyball Community is Growing

MORE THAN A GAME • February 11, 2026

The squeak of sneakers on the hardwood, the rhythm of a perfect set-and-spike, and the roar of the sideline after a massive block—these are the sounds that define our nights at Parma Volleyball.

But if you ask any of our players what keeps them coming back season after season, they’ll tell you it isn’t just about the scoreline. It’s about the community we’ve built right here in Parma.

Building Skills, Building Confidence

Whether you are stepping onto the court for the very first time or you’re a seasoned vet with a lethal jump serve, there is always room to grow. This season, we’ve seen incredible progress across all our divisions. Our coaches have been focusing on:

  • Precision Communication: Learning to "call the ball" is the first step to winning.
  • Reactive Defense: Moving with agility and reading the hitter’s shoulders.
  • The Mental Game: Staying focused and positive, even when the set is tied at 24-24.

The Power of Teamwork

Volleyball is arguably the ultimate team sport. You can’t win with one superstar; you win through chemistry and trust. At Parma Volleyball, we pride ourselves on being a "no-ego" zone. We play hard, we celebrate every point, and we pick each other up after a tough loss.

In volleyball, the serve is the only time you have total control over the ball. It’s the start of every point and your first opportunity to put the opposing team on their heels. At Parma Volleyball , we believe a strong serve isn’t just about power—it’s about consistency, placement, and a little bit of psychology. If you’re looking to turn your serve into a weapon, here are three ways to refine your technique before your next match. 1. Master Your Toss The most common mistake players make happens before the hand even touches the ball. A shaky toss leads to a shaky serve. The Fix: Practice tossing the ball with your non-dominant hand so that it lands in the same spot every time. You want it slightly in front of your hitting shoulder so your body weight naturally moves forward into the court. 2. Find the "Sweet Spot" Whether you’re hitting a standing float or a high-velocity jump serve, contact is king. To get that unpredictable "float" movement that drives passers crazy, you need to hit the ball dead-center with a firm, flat palm. The Fix: Think "stop-sign hand." Keep your wrist stiff and pull your hand back immediately after contact to minimize spin. 3. Aim for the "Seams" Don’t just serve "in"—serve with intention. The hardest balls to pass are the ones that fall right between two players (the seams). The Fix: During practice, visualize the court in zones. Try to target the deep corners or the "short" zone just behind the 10-foot line to keep the defense guessing. Practice Makes Permanent As the saying goes, "Practice doesn't make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect." Join us during our Open Gym hours this Tuesday and Thursday to get some extra reps in. Our coaches are always around to help you tweak your toss or find that extra bit of power. Ready to ace the competition? We'll see you at the service line!

We’ve all been there: you’re so excited to get the game started that you skip the warm-up and go straight to hitting lines. But at Parma Volleyball , we want you playing at your peak for years, not just for one set. Volleyball is a sport of explosive movements—jumping, pivoting, and overhead swinging. To protect your joints and increase your vertical, you need a dynamic warm-up that wakes up your muscles. Here are four essentials to do before you ever touch the ball. 1. The "Open Book" (Thoracic Mobility) Your power doesn’t just come from your arm; it comes from your core and mid-back rotation. The Move: Lie on your side with knees bent, and slowly rotate your top arm across your body to the floor, following your hand with your eyes. This opens up your chest and prepares your shoulders for serving and spiking. 2. Lateral Lunges (Hip Activation) Volleyball is a game of side-to-side hustle. To get low for those "pancake" digs, your hips need to be loose and ready. The Move: Step wide to the side, keeping one leg straight while bending the other, sitting your hips back. This mimics the defensive stance you’ll use all night. 3. Glute Bridges (Power Foundation) Every inch of your vertical jump starts in your glutes. If they aren't "firing," your knees and lower back take the brunt of the impact when you land. The Move: Lie on your back and lift your hips toward the ceiling, squeezing at the top. This ensures your biggest muscles are doing the heavy lifting during your approach. 4. Banded "No-Moneys" (Shoulder Health) The "volleyball shoulder" is a real thing. To prevent rotator cuff issues, you need to warm up the small stabilizing muscles around the joint. The Move: Grab a light resistance band, keep your elbows tucked to your ribs, and rotate your hands outward. It’s a small move that makes a massive difference in your hitting longevity. Train Like a Pro Want more personalized tips? Our coaches often run "Pre-Game Clinics" 15 minutes before league play starts to walk everyone through these movements. Taking five minutes to prime your body is the best way to ensure your best performance on the court. Stay healthy, stay bouncy, and we’ll see you at the net!

Walking into a new gym can feel a bit like stepping onto center court at the Olympics—exciting, but a little nerve-wracking. If you’ve been thinking about joining us at Parma Volleyball but aren't sure what to expect, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Here is everything you need to know to transition from the sidelines to the starting lineup. 1. What to Bring You don't need a professional contract to play here, but a few essentials will make your experience much better: The Right Shoes: Standard running shoes work, but court shoes or volleyball-specific sneakers offer the lateral support you need for quick side-to-side movements. Kneepads: Your floor-defense game will thank you later! Hydration: Bring a reusable water bottle. We play hard, and staying hydrated is key to keeping your energy up through the final set. 2. Finding Your Level One of the best things about Parma Volleyball is that we host everything from "Never-Played-Before" clinics to "A-Level" competitive power leagues. When you arrive, our staff will help point you toward the court that matches your current skill level so you can play comfortably and competitively. 3. The "Parma" Atmosphere We’re a loud, high-energy gym. Expect music, a lot of cheering, and a community that high-fives after every point (even the ones we lose). We focus on positive coaching and inclusive play. If you don't know a rule or where to stand in a 6-2 rotation, just ask—your teammates are your best resource.
